Traveling around Cuba is varied – from more expensive taxis to cheaper collectiva and comfortable Viazul buses.

After arriving in Cuba, taxis are a common means of transportation from the airport to downtown Havana. Prices range from €12 to €18 per car, and it is possible to travel even cheaper if you arrange a shared ride. Our first host arranged a taxi for us. Local taxis called "collectivos" operate in cities, and the price depends largely on your ability to bargain. Official tourist taxis are more expensive – for example, a short ride around Havana can cost €6-12. We also took a taxi from Havana to the famous Santa Maria beach, which cost us €30 for a one-way trip – but here, too, the price depends on what you can negotiate.
Intercity transport is mainly provided by Viazul long-distance buses, which are comfortable and safe. The journey from Havana to Varadero costs €10–12, while longer routes to Trinidad or Viñales cost around €20–30. It is best to book tickets in advance, either online or directly at bus terminals.
Renting a car is more complicated, which we discuss in more detail in a separate article.
